Submissions

Verse of April is Currently Accepting Poetry Translations (French to English or English to French), Essays and Interviews. Please Read below for our guidelines.

TranslationS:

We are currently reviewing for publication translations (French to English or English to French) of living poets’ work. At this time, we do not feel qualified to evaluate translations to and from any other languages.

Guidelines:

1) Translators should submit up to 5 poems with their French/English originals. All poems should be sent in one Word or PDF document.

2) Translators should have explicit permission from the living poet and publisher of the living poet to translate and publish the translations. The permissions relationship should be detailed in the body of the email.

3) All submitted translations must be original and never before published online or in print. Texts should be entirely human-translated.

Note: Upon acceptance, Verse of April will ask translators for a short “Translator’s Note” to accompany the publication of the translation(s).

Submissions should be sent to verseofapril@gmail.com. Please use “[Publishing Name] - Translation Submission” as your subject line.

EssayS and InterviewS:

We are currently accepting submissions of interviews and essays that engage with the poetry, artistic practice, or community work of a living poet. We are not opposed to book reviews and will happily consider such pieces. However, we are more interested in “poem essays” or “book essays,” a practice we liken to the personal essay and see as one dedicated to exposing some aspect of the writing poet’s “experience” or “relationship” with a text or collection — or perhaps more globally “the work” — of one of their contemporaries. Interviews or essays speaking to multiple contemporary poets are also welcome.

Guidelines:

1) All essay and interview submissions should be sent in either Word or PDF format.

2) Essays may vary in length but should not exceed 15 standard, single-spaced pages. Flash essay submissions are permitted. Interviews should be between 10-15 standard, single-spaced pages.

3) A brief third-person biography should accompany your submission and may be sent in the body of the email. For interviews, third-person biographies should be sent for each interview participant.

Submissions should be sent to verseofapril@gmail.com. Please use either “[Publishing Name] - Interview Submission” or “[Publishing Name] - Essay Submission” as your subject line.

For the time being, there is no deadline for this space. Submissions and acceptances will happen on a rolling basis.

Editorial Statement: Under no circumstances will Verse of April review work that is racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, or intentionally or unintentionally harmful or derogatory. Please preface work that is potentially triggering with an appropriate warning in the email that accompanies your submission.
