Mnemosynes with an s, yes, because at the heart of this project is a want to insist on the plurality of memory — of different languages, rhetorics, ancestries, and writing practices. As such, we like to host our readings in "pairs," between two artists who might be in conversation across various themes and approaches. It is this aspect of inter-relationality between poets that links us to our mother-project, Verse of April.
Each event features a reading and an exchange and is dedicated to creating space for feminist and queer poets to enter into intimate discussion with our Parisian literary community. We like that our events are small and not a one-sided performance, where the audience might be held in a passive, laudatory role. Rather, we invite our community of fellow artists to create more lasting connection with our featured artists.
While we have primarily featured English- and French-speaking poets, Mnemosynes is also committed to celebrating multilingual poets.
The series was founded in 2024 by Verse of April Editor Carrie Chappell.
